COVID-19 Antibody Testing Program
Antibodies are proteins that help fight off infections and can provide protection against getting that disease again (immunity). These antibodies are disease specific meaning that specific antibodies are created for different types of infections. For example, measles antibodies are different from mumps antibodies.
Antibody tests check a person’s blood and detect past exposure to a virus based on the presence of these antibodies. The Department of Public Health is offering free COVID IgG antibody testing to community members. This type of test checks for a type of antibody called Immunoglobulin G (IgG). If you have been exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19, your body typically produces IgG antibodies within 2 or 3 weeks after exposure as part of the immune response to the virus. This type of COVID-19 test DOES NOT detect current infection and it is for individuals who think they may have had COVID-19 but do not currently have symptoms.
It is not known for how long IgG antibodies remain detectable. It is also important to note that some persons do not develop detectable levels of IgG antibodies following infection. Thus, the absence of IgG antibodies does not necessarily rule out that they could have previously been infected. Individuals who test positive for IgG should still practice COVID-19 prevention measures as immunity is not clearly defined at this point.
Your participation in the program is completely voluntary and the information collected will not be shared, and only used by DPH planning purposes. We encourage individuals to register as soon as possible as tests are limited.
Individuals will have to:
- Register using the antibody testing form
- DPH staff member will be communicating either via email or phone to you letting you know if you have been selected to participate based on test availability
- Upon approval, DPH staff will send the test order confirmation via email address and provide information on scheduling an appointment
- You will be responsible for scheduling an appointment at any of the Quest Patient Services Centers
- You will be responsible for going to their selected Quest Patient Services Center
- You will be responsible for self-checking results on the Quest portal.
